Orbits
Composer Emily Howard and mathematician Lasse Rempe-Gillen speak about their collaboration and project Orbits. Featuring scapegoat.
Orbit 1a (2015) and Orbit 2a (2015) for soprano saxophone and crotales were composed towards the end of Emily’s Leverhulme Residency at the Department of Mathematical Sciences in Liverpool, and are more directly influenced by recent mathematical research in dynamical systems [Rempe-Gillen/van Strien] than the earlier work Leviathan. Emily describes the Orbits as ‘Etudes in Dynamical Systems’ and collaborated with mathematician Lasse Rempe-Gillen on the overall concept for Orbits. Orbit 1a is a musical response to mathematical data contributed by Alexandre DeZotti and Orbit 2a is a musical response to mathematical data contributed by Lasse Rempe-Gillen.
Watch Orbit 1a and Orbit 2a, performed by scapegoat in the Leverhulme Artist in Residence Presentation Event ‘Points of Convergence: Music meets Mathematics’ on 17 November 2015.
