Our pioneering work
Mass spectrometry and instrumentation research has been undertaken at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics since the pioneering work of Professor Harry Leck in the 1960s.
The current research focus of the Group, led by Simon Maher, is based on a holistic systems approach to enable portable solutions whereby samples can be analysed in-situ, in their native environment, with minimal/no sample preparation.
We have considerable experience developing portable mass spectrometer systems and novel analytical methods for environmental, security and medical applications. Our expertise covers theory, modelling, design, simulation, fabrication, control electronics, data processing, method development, validation and verification.
