The NIHR Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Emerging and Zoonotic Infections at the University of Liverpool has funded a pilot project which will allow comparing the antibiotics prescribing practices in human and small animal health through the use of their electronic health records (EHRs).   SAVSNET’s Dr Fernando Sanchez Vizcaino Buendia will be working with medics on this exciting and important research.  Fernando said “The use of EHRs by medics and veterinary surgeons in practices provides an opportunity to improve antibiotic prescription surveillance in both medical and animal health. If this project is successful it will provide a baseline measure from which it will be possible to track spatio-temporal changes in prescribing in both medical and animal health. This pilot project is our first step before we explore the potential relationship between antibiotic prescription and antimicrobial resistant in both humans and small animals”. It’s great to see the veterinary and medical profession working together in this clinically significant area.
