Physicist “Highly Commended” at Women of the Future Awards
Dr Laura Harkness-Brennan, short-listed in the Science category of the ‘Women of the Future Awards’ has been ‘highly commended’ for her work.
Founded by Pinky Lilani in 2006 The ‘Women of the Future Awards’ recognizes and celebrates the inspirational female talent in Britain today across a number of sectors including Media, Business and Arts and Culture. This year’s event took place in London on 27th October and was attended by HRH Countess of Wessex. Dr Harkness-Brennan is a nuclear physics lecturer in the Department of Physics whose research focuses on the development of novel gamma-ray detection and imaging techniques for fundamental experimental nuclear physics research and in the healthcare and security fields. She undertakes a range of public engagement activities and has delivered many talks at schools and public events. She has previously been awarded the Very Early Career Woman Physicist of the Year by the Institute of Physics.
Dr Harkness-Brennan said: “This year’s awards saw an impressive list of women recognised as being pioneers in their respective fields. I was the only person short-listed in my category to be ‘highly commended’ which, given the extremely high standard of everyone’s work, I am very proud of.”
