About
I'm a multimodal and interactional linguist as well as an EFL teacher. I'm mostly a qualitative researcher and I work on Conversation Analysis/Interactional Linguistics, the phonetics of talk-in-interaction, gesture studies, and empirical video studies of interaction more generally.
I'm a passionate and experienced educator and researcher always finding joy and new challenges in interdisciplinary spaces. I've been involved in different projects trying to understand social life in many different ways: choral productions in interaction, the organisation and phonetics of laughter, breathing techniques as introduced by SLTs for voice therapy, embodied sales strategies by ambulant vendors, multimodal features of everyday gossip, disfluencies in (a)typical interaction, interactions with delivery robots on the street. I have also worked on devising frameworks for the teaching of intonation in different speech genres, and different aspects of classroom interaction for the training of EFL teachers.
I completed my PhD in Language and Communication in the Department of Language and Linguistic Science (LLS) at the University of York in 2020. During my PhD I worked as a GTA in the departments of LLS and of Sociology in modules on phonetics, prosody, English grammar, EAP, Spanish as L2, and Conversation Analysis. As a lecturer at York (2022-2025), I taught modules and CPD courses on Multimodality and Conversation Analysis, as well as on Phonetics and Phonology. Between 2020 and 2022, I worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Open University (UK), as part of three interactional and socio-pragmatic research projects in English and in Spanish with data collected from different institutional settings.
I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA, 2023, AFHEA, 2018) and an awardee of the UoY Vice Chancellor’s Teaching Award (2019).
I started my academic career as an EFL teacher and teacher educator in 2003. Before starting my PhD in the UK, I lectured in Applied/Practical Phonetics for a decade (2006-2016) and briefly also in Discourse Analysis at different undergraduate and graduate programmes in Buenos Aires, Argentina (ISP Joaquín V González, ENSLV Sofía B de Spangenberg, Profesorado del Consudec, CIBADIST, Universidad de Belgrano, Universidad Nacional de San Martín), training EFL teachers and translators, pre- and in-service.
When I'm not teaching or doing research, I'm cycling somewhere in the UK or the world!
