Professor Ian Smith

Teaching

Ian has a special interest in the use of ‘safe failure’ and of the use of playful learning techniques in learning, teaching and assessment. He has written and researched on the teaching of micro-therapy skills, in particular the use of solution focused approaches. He has an MA in Solution Focused Brief Therapy from the University of Birmingham. He has taught and facilitated workshops around the UK and in South America on these topics. He also has a special interest in developing best practice and efficiency in the supervision of doctoral research.

Ian is the Chair of the Education Committee of the Department of Primary Care and Mental Health at the University of Liverpool. He is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and was previously nominated for their National Teaching Fellowship award.
