Dr Florence Mgawadere is an accomplished health systems researcher and an academic with over 20 years’ experience teaching in higher education, research leadership and delivering contract-based technical advice in LMIC drawing on a disciplinary background in nursing, midwifery and public health. She holds PhD in Global HealthDr Florence Mgawadere profile from the University of Liverpool, Master of Public Health and BSc in Nursing and Midwifery from University of Malawi. She is a Fellow of The Higher Education Academy and an honorary Lecturer at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM). Over the course of her career, she has held several senior roles and maintains a passion for teaching, research, curriculum development and student experience. Florence has wealth of experience on mentoring and supervising staff and students in diverse academic settings on research and on global health.
Florence joined University of Liverpool in September 2022 as a Lecturer in Adult Nursing. She leads and teaches across both postgraduate and undergraduate modules including the new professional Doctorate in health degree. She was appointed as Health and safety lead for the School of Allied Health Professions and Nursing and serves as an assessment Officer for MSc Nursing programmes. Alongside her teaching and administrative responsibilities, Florence is highly committed to increasing research capability and capacity for Nurses, Midwives and Allied Healthcare Professionals in the translation of evidenced-based care into clinical practice.
Prior to her current role, she worked as a Senior Research Associate at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) for eight years following 12 years as a Lecturer at the University of Malawi. Her role centred around research, teaching and leading on undergraduate and postgraduates programmes including PhD supervision and providing technical assistance to improve quality of maternal and newborn health in seven Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC). Florence played a key role in the conceptualisation and development of the online MSc in Global Health at LSTM from its inception, contributing to the programme’s design and delivery. She also served as member of LSTM the Research Ethics Committee for five years.
Her research interests are on, quality improvement, women’s health and pedagogy. She has specialist expertise in qualitative research methods, particularly in health systems and services research, and qualitative evidence synthesis. She has published extensively in the field of maternal health focusing on optimal outcomes in alignment with national and international health priorities. Florence has a strong track record of developing capacity of researchers, managers and health workers and strengthening quality improvement projects in Africa and Asia.
