The Department of Mathematical Sciences is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Kurt Langfeld as Head of Department and Professor in Theoretical Physics.

“For more than forty years, I have had a passion for the world beyond everyday life experience. Having lived through the exciting realms of Einstein's theory and Quantum Physics as a young student, I realised that you do not need to expose yourself to the hostile environment of outer-space to discover the unexpected. After my PhD in 1991 (Technical University of Munich), my years as a Postdoc brought me to the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Tuebingen and places like the CEA, Saclay, Paris and the KIAS, Seoul, Korea. In 1999, I passed the “Habilitation” at the University of Tuebingen, which is a German certificate for excellent teaching skills, and I  became Professor for Theoretical Physics in 2005. In August 2006, I joined Plymouth University where I held a chair in Theoretical Physics from  2012-16.”

"I look forward to working with the excellent staff to shape our research portfolio and to guide the Department to the next research evaluations such as REF. At the same time, we will streamline our teaching portfolio to free more time for research. Exciting times lie ahead when we will grow in numbers to offer an even better experience for our students. My plan is to achieve this by building on the existing strengths and to let them grow.”
