What did you study at A-level (or equivalent), and why did you select those subjects?
Maths, Physics, Biology, Chemistry (AS Level), and an EPQ on The Theories Surrounding the Disappearance of Malaysia Airlines MH370. I chose these subjects because of their relevance to my chosen degree (particularly Maths and Physics), and I found Biology to be both interesting and diverse. I loved French and Music but chose to pursue those independently rather than academically. I especially enjoyed my EPQ, as it allowed me to explore a topic I was genuinely passionate about.
What degree did you study?
Avionic Systems with Pilot Studies.
What inspired you to choose and study your degree subject?
From a young age, I aspired to become a commercial airline pilot, and eventually transition into aviation safety, with the goal of becoming an air crash investigator. I chose to study Avionic Systems because of my strong interest in modern aviation technology. I believed that an electrical engineering-based degree—covering systems such as satellites, antennas, and automation—would give me the deepest understanding for my future career in aviation.
What key skills did you learn at university?
Communication, leadership, organisation, confidence, effective study techniques, problem-solving, perseverance, and resilience.
What jobs have you had during your career?
RAF Volunteer Reserve, Operations Control Centre Controller, Specialist in Network Operations, and currently, Second Officer.
What is your current job, and what do you enjoy about it?
I’m currently a First Officer with easyJet. I love the variety—no two days are the same. Each flight brings new scenarios and challenges. The views are better than any office, and I enjoy meeting so many different people every day, from crew to passengers. Creating contingency plans to account for external factors like weather makes the job dynamic and rewarding.
Do you have an area of expertise?
Malaysia Airlines MH370.
What has been your most exciting project or career role?
I really enjoyed working as a Specialist in Network Operations. It gave me a bird’s-eye view of all the flights scheduled to depart each day. You could see how every part of the operation fit together like a puzzle, and how one disruption could have wide-reaching effects across the network. It was fascinating to see that system in motion.
What are your top tips for working in your industry/sector?
Be resilient, take on new challenges, and enjoy yourself!
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Take every opportunity that comes your way—you never know what doors it might open.
Any advice you’d like to share?
You can be anything you want to be, as long as you have the drive, determination, and dedication to follow your dreams.
Why are you passionate about your subject/STEM?
I believe it's important to advocate for women in aviation, just as it is to promote women in STEM more broadly. I want people to see that this is a career women can and do thrive in.
