Lecture: Careers Don't Go in Straight Lines
Speaker: Professor Athene Donald: The topics of my research career have changed fairly radically over the years. Having started off as an electron microscopist on metals I ended up studying protein aggregation, although I like to believe each step on the way was rational. In this talk I will focus on how physics can be used to study plants in novel ways from innovative electron microscopy methods, to utilising ideas developed in very different areas of materials science by treating plants as a foam. However, towards the end of my career I have found myself largely involved with topics unrelated to research including school education, science policy and gender equality. I will touch on some of these areas too to make the point that careers can take you in unexpected directions.
6th March, 3pm, Brunner Lecture Theatre, Department of Chemistry
Lecture: ‘The Science of Goo’
The soft materials colloquially known as goo turn up all over the place in our everyday lives, from food to playthings, from glues to medical ointments. But what leads to this 'gooiness'? In this IOP Merseyside FREE lecture Professor Athene Donald (University of Cambridge) will describe why it is that long chain molecules (polymers) can be used to make these materials, why they have the effect they have, and how understanding them can be powerful for creating new medical treatments.
Monday 6th March, 6:30-8pm, CTL
A Fatal Attraction?: Why people are fascinated by robots, and what to do about it
We are delighted to have Professor Kerstin Dautenhahn, from the University of Hertfordshire, delivering the second of a series of annual Robotics public lectures at this evening event. "My talk will address differences between biological and artificial creatures, and how the common perception of robots as "persons" can mislead us and raise expectations that the robots are not (yet, or never will be) able to fulfil. An alternative view focuses on the machine-like qualities and functionalities that robots are good at and which open up promising applications that can benefit society e.g. in healthcare applications, such as assisting older people in their own homes or teaching children with autism about communication and social interaction".
