About

I have held the post of Chair Professor in Clinical Ophthalmology at the University since 2008 and was Head of the Department of Eye and Vision Science from 2010-2020. Previously I held a full time NHS Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon post at St. Paul's Eye Unit, Royal Liverpool University Hospital and continue in this role as an Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at St. Paul's Eye Unit, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

I am a clinical scientist working in translational research in ophthalmology and vision science with a focus on the detection, prevention and treatment of retinal disease. I have CI experience at programme grant level (Wellcome Trust, NIHR) and have extensive experience as PI/Co-I in a range of international, multicentre and translational studies and projects.

My research portfolio is currently directed to the prevention and treatment of diabetic retinopathy. My long standing research in screening and early detection has moved in recent years to the global implementation of whole system approaches designed for different health systems and in partnership with WHO. I am leading the application of new technologies of artificial intelligence, risk prediction and imaging as applied to diabetic retinopathy and am part of a University spin-out, AI-Sight Ltd which aims to deploy novel solutions in DR screening.
