The University has identified six key research themes to help achieve its aim to be at the forefront of innovative research, scholarship and knowledge leadership.

Since its establishment in 1881, the University has been making a positive impact on people’s lives, through improving health, generating wealth and ensuring social justice. To help it to continue to respond to some of the most pressing needs within society, and to make the most of its unique strengths and capabilities, an institutional review of the University’s research strengths has identified the following ‘themes’:

*Advanced Materials

*Personalised Health

*Infectious Diseases

*Digital

*Heritage

*Starting well, living well, ageing well

This new approach will help the University better support interdisciplinary research whilst highlighting and focusing the strengths of its three faculties; Science and Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Health and Life Sciences.

Professor Anthony Hollander, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Impact, said: “The institutional research themes have been identified from our existing world-leading research base and aim to bring together communities of researchers from different disciplines to contribute solutions that will ultimately improve health, create economic empowerment and wealth, and ensure social justice.

“The themes aim to encourage and support interdisciplinary research through collaboration; by fostering learning from good practice; by creating a framework with support mechanisms; and by bringing together research and Professional Services staff in collaborative teams.”
