Overview

This module is mapped against A1+ level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is for students who have completed Level 101/001 Beginners 1 or who have basic knowledge of the language. Through a variety of methods, students will further develop their basic competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking and their understanding of basic grammar using authentic material such as articles and videoclips. Students will discover various cultural aspects of France such as music, traditions and customs.

Learning outcomes 

At the end of this 12-week module, students will be able to carry out simple tasks in the language. Students will be able to understand and use everyday expressions and basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of most needs in a day-to-day context. They will be able to interact and participate effectively in basic conversations. They will have a good understanding of aspects of life and culture of countries where the language is spoken and the intercultural skills necessary for their language proficiency level.

  • Week 1 Accommodations/il y a/ il n’y a pas de/trop de/pas assez de/prepositions/ revision of the present tense
  • Week 2 Descriptions: physically and personalities/ colours and their agreements/past tense with avoir
  • Week 3 il faut/il ne faut pas/irregular past participles/prepostions of place/ Past tense with avoir in the negative form
  • Week 4 Hobbies/contracted articles/past tense with être
  • Week 5 Internet and social media/on pronoun/parce que/pour/activities on holidays/reflexive verbs in the past tense
  • Week 6 friendship/agreeing/disagreeing/imperative (1)/irregular adjectives
  • Week 7 food/partitive articles/French recipes
  • Week 8 giving preferences with food/quantities/ Direct object pronouns
  • Week 9 food of the world/sequencers/presenting a recipe
  • Week 10 Town/directions/transports/names of shops
  • Week 11 Clothes/Immediate future/imperative (2)/y pronoun
  • Week 12 Written and speaking tests will take place this week. Completing the assessment is required for students taking the course as part of their degree, or if they would like to have the course recorded in their HEAR.

For all other students, taking the tests is also strongly recommended, as a measure of your progress and learning.

Study Hours

The total number of study hours for this module is 150 hours, in line with undergraduate university modules. This includes class meetings, assessment preparation and self-directed study in line with guidance from the course lecturer.

If you are studying on the extracurricular mode, we recognise that the total number of hours that you may be able to study every week may depend on your availability and previous experience studying languages, however, expected contribution to classes, homework completion, and learning outcomes will not vary. 

Course Lecturer: Nathalie Rubio

My name is Nathalie Rubio and I have been teaching languages, French and Spanish, for the past 15 years in various settings.  I am originally from France and have been in this country since 1994. I completed a MA in Translation in 2009 at the University of Salford and a PGCE qualification at Edge Hill University.  I worked as an interpreter for several years before dedicating my professional career to the education sector.

Fees for language courses are £190/£95.
