While on her internment at the Cockcroft Institute Monika Chudanicova took part in a Dark Sky Discovery event organized by STFC’s public engagement officer Alan Brown and the Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre. Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre is situated in beautiful nature of Lake District, in Ennerdale, which is considered to be one of the best places in England to observe night sky because of low light pollution. STFC contributes to this event with its mobile planetarium Star Lab and presentations about star constellations and planets. Take a look at the photos to see the mobile planetarium installed in the field centre’s barn and this fine setting in the Lakes.

The two day event included a meeting of the field centre’s members and an interesting programme for visitors with two Star lab shows and two talks about imaging the stars and planets and the equipment required for this. There were also telescopes prepared for direct night sky observation. Monika commented, ‘There was a friendly and welcoming atmosphere during the whole event and many opportunities to chat with the members of the field centre about different interesting topics. The next Dark Sky Discovery event takes place in March. I would strongly recommend that anyone who is interested in learning about the beauties of night sky should attend this event with the added bonus of spending time in pleasant environment which Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre and its surroundings offer.’
