Biography
James Peter Moffatt is a Composer, Musician, Record Producer & Academic who has scored numerous international films including BAFTA shortlisted ‘We Are Dancers’ and the multi-award-winning ‘House of Cardin’. James is pursuing a PhD in Film Music at the University of Liverpool. James holds an MA with distinction in Music for the Moving Image from Leeds Beckett University, and was awarded the 'Solid State Logic Prize for Excellence'. He holds a 1st Class BA (Hons) in Music Production & Performance from Leeds Beckett University.
Research Interests
His research explores the contexts and practicalities of contemporary film scoring in the post-digital context. In particular, investigating how the emergence of online streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, and the digitisation and globalisation of film, and film music, production, distribution and consumption has changed the role and responsibilities of the composer for visual media and impacted the aesthetics of their creative output: music. His research comments more broadly on tensions surrounding platform capitalism, creative labour and the wider cultural industries, with key research interests as follows: Film and Music Industries, Creative Labour and the Cultural Industries, Digitisation, Technological, Practice-Led Research, Composition, Music Production.
A composer for film and television, his work has been broadcast and recognised by the BBC, Venice Film Festival, Rolling Stone Magazine, Vice and The Hollywood Reporter, collaborating with Academy-Award and BAFTA winning personnel. James has received recognition and critical acclaim for his most recent contribution to House of Cardin, a feature documentary chronicling the life and design of fashion icon Pierre Cardin, as well as a BAFTA shortlisting for the 2019 film We Are Dancers. James continues to score multiple upcoming films in the US, the UK and continental Europe.
James incorporates his research and practice into his teachings as a Senior Lecturer in Film Music at Leeds Conservatoire as well as a Visiting Lecturer at University of Liverpool, Huddersfield University and Leeds Beckett University.
James' PhD research is supervised by Dr Robert Strachan and Dr Paul Turowski.
