Aims

The aim of this modules are to:

  • Provide key transferable skills to undergraduates including: communication, presentation, team-working
  • Provide undergraduates with educational expertise and first-hand experience in educational settings involving Computing teaching
  • Encourage and inspire a new generation of Computing teachers
  • Provide role models for pupuls within schools located in areas of high deprivation and increase the University of Liverpool widening participation activities in the area

Have an understanding of the UK educational system and relevant teaching and learning styles

Have an understanding of the widening participation agenda

Be able to apply the relevant protocols and safeguarding practice when delivering within a school setting

Be able to apply practical knowledge of effective delivery styles when engaging with primary or secondary aged pupils

Reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of the delivery

Have experience of planning and delivery of a project

Have experience of team working

Have experience of sicence communication in a variety of situations


Syllabus

Semester 1: Induction and training

A series of lectures delivered by EO team members will cover the following topics:

  • The UK educational system
  • Key stage 2 (KS2) and 3 (KS3) learning styles
  • Widening participation
Students will also be trained as STEM ambassadors. The topics above will be illustrated in practice through shadowing of EO team members.
Students will produce a detaied lesson plan for a KS2 or KS3 lesson on a Computing topic, and will write an essay on a Computing component of the KS2 or KS3 National Curriculum.

Semester 2: Delivery

Students w ill prepare interactive outreach sessions based on their choices from a menu of tested activities. They will prepare presentationsbased around these activities and present 5 sessions to KS2 or KS3 pupils either in the University or in local schools.

They will evaluate the effectiveness of the sessions they deliver, and report on their outreach work both through a written report and a poster session.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lecture - Lectures delivered by the EO team

Breakdown: 40 hours for poster and final report preparation, 15 hours for shadowing EO team member, 5 hours stem ambassador training, 35 hours preparation and delivery of outreach activities
