About

FAVSNET is funded through Arwain DCG. The aim of this project is to pilot the collection of electronic health data from veterinary practices providing care to farm animals. The hope is that this data will be used to support farm animal health and surveillance in the United Kingdom.

Currently disease surveillance is the responsibility of DEFRA in Great Britain and in Northern Ireland (NI), it is responsibility of the NI Department of Agriculture. DEFRA delegate the collection of data to the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) for Wales and England and to Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) for Scotland. The data is aggregated together in the Veterinary Investigation Diagnosis Analysis (VIDA) database for surveillance. This report is based on data submitted by diagnostic laboratories such as laboratory testing for animals that are alive and results of post-mortem analysis.

FAVSNET will complement current farm animal surveillance by using health data from patient electronic health records (EHRs). It will capitalise on knowledge and collaborations developed through the Small Animal Veterinary Surveillance Network and the Equine Veterinary Surveillance Network (EVSNET).
