This session will consider the connections between the Scottish Enlightenment historian, philosopher, and political thinker David Hume (1711-76) and the Jacobites, the supporters of the exiled Stuart royal family in eighteenth-century Britain. It argues that many Jacobites and non-Jacobites co-existed harmoniously to a surprising degree in eighteenth-century Scotland, and that Hume’s life and work provides an excellent case study for illustrating this. Dr Max Skjönsberg joined the Department of History at Liverpool as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in October 2019, working on the Libraries, Reading Communities and Cultural Formation in the Eighteenth Century Atlantic project.
