School of Physical Sciences Inaugural Lecture to celebrate the promotion to a Chair of Vin Dhanak.

It has been 50 years since Kai Siegbhan published his two seminal papers identifying factors that were important for understanding X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) phenomenon generally and chemical shifts specifically. The impact of this work on the development of XPS was so important that Siegbhan was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work on electron spectroscopy. Since then, with technological advances photoelectron spectroscopy has been in use for the study of materials and with considerable success, in fields ranging from catalysis and metallurgy to microelectronics and advanced materials for energy applications. In this inaugural lecture, I will provide some examples from my work to illustrate how electron spectroscopy has provided key insights for a deeper understanding of real materials. I will start with some of the earliest work soon after graduating and conclude with some of the most recent work in energy related materials. The lecture will celebrate my journey, and that of my colleagues and friends along the way, of some 30 years in this field, developing XPS instrumentation and measuring.
