The Role of Private Military and Security Companies in the Wars of Weak States with Drs Nicolas Lees & Ulrich Petersohn

Private Military and Security Companies (PMSCs) are frequently contracted by weak, politically unstable states during civil conflicts. Existing research indicates that conflicts in weak states are significantly more intense in terms of their level of violence when PMSCs are present. Our paper uses data from 1990 to 2007 to test the claim that PMSC presence leads to the intensification of conflict in weak states and to assess the opportunity and willingness of weak states to contract with PMSCs.
