This talk will explore how historical floods and droughts have impacted on societies and why they continue to happen today. Through this talk we will explore how we can reconstruct an understanding of past floods and droughts since during the last millennium right through to the present day and how this can help us understanding the risks that extreme events present, and how they have impacted on different communities in the past. We highlight that many of the floods and droughts experienced during our lifetimes are severe, but often not unique, nor unexpected.
