Life Histories of Figurines from Minoan Peak Sanctuaries with Dr Christine Morris

Terracotta figurines in human and animal form are found in their thousands on Minoan Bronze Age peak sanctuaries throughout the island of Crete. This lecture will explore these figurines through the perspective of their ‘life histories’ or ‘biographies’, discussing their life cycles from production to consumption.

Through this approach we can engage with the figurines in a more experiential way, thinking about them in terms of both technologies of production and practices of use. The talk will draw on material from the fully excavated site of Atsipadhes in western Crete as well as material from Eastern Crete, which is currently part of a 3D scanning project.
