Aravind Eye Care system
I am the academic director at Aravind Eye Hospital and am also the Chief of the Department of Cornea. I began my career in the Cornea Department in 1993 and am now the Chief of Medical Education of Aravind Eye Hospital & Post Graduate Institute Of Ophthalmology. I hold a DNB from the National Board and have been awarded an honorary FRCS.

My talk is the story of how an 11 bedded Aravind Eye Hospital transformed into the largest eye care service delivery system in the world. Aravind Eye Hospital was founded in 1976 by Dr G Venkataswamy; a man known to most of us simply as Dr V. In an 11 bed hospital manned by 4 medical officers, he saw the potential for what is today, one of the largest facilities in the world for eye care. Over the years, this organization has evolved into a sophisticated system dedicated to compassionate service for sight. The Aravind Eye Care System now serves as a model for India and the rest of the world.
