All animals face a variety of challenges, both from their environment and from each other. To deal with these pressures animals have evolved a variety of behavioural strategies; interestingly, individuals often consistently differ in how they respond to a pressure. For example, some animals may prefer being active and seeking out resources, even when it's dangerous to do so, whereas others are much more reserved and prefer safer resources even if of lower quality. Animals with these different "personalities" also differ in their ability to respond to stress. Together these physiological and behavioural parameters are termed coping styles and have distinct consequences for how animals can react and respond to the world around them.
