His research focuses on exploiting mechanotransduction pathways in therapeutic stem cells to develop novel therapies and to improve scale up manufacture of cells using bioreactors, particularly focusing on applications in orthopaedic tissue engineering.
Whilst at Keele University, James demonstrated that applied mechanical stimulation using bioreactors can significantly enhance osteogenesis in hydrogel-cultured stem cells, and also complement other approaches such as sustained release growth factor delivery and bespoke biomaterials.
His research at Liverpool continues this theme, working towards developing tissue engineered and regenerative solutions for osteoarthritis that combine biomimetic scaffolds and dynamic in vitro culture.
As a newly independent research fellow, James is actively looking for collaborators to expand his research into new areas, and is particularly keen to expand into the areas of scale up manufacture of cell therapies, marketable biomaterials and novel molecular approaches for studying cell behaviour in vitro.
