How do fitness trackers and health apps shape women’s daily lives and what do they miss?

Join us for a free 2-hour creative storytelling workshop, part of the Festival of Social Science, exploring how wearables and health apps - like Fitbit, Apple Watch, Oura Ring, Strava, and the Health App - shape women’s lives.

Who can attend?
Women aged 18–35 who have used these technologies (or are interested in trying them).

What to expect:
Too often, technology overlooks women’s experiences - from hormonal cycles and reproductive health to unpaid care work. In this workshop, you’ll:

Reflect on your own experiences with health technology
Use creative writing to complete fictional scenarios and imagine more inclusive futures
Take part in supportive group discussion (recorded for research purposes)
No writing experience is required, and you only share your writing if you feel comfortable

This is a space to connect with other women (18–35), develop your storytelling skills, and add your voice to the conversation about the future of health technology.
By taking part, you will not only develop your own voice, but also help lay the groundwork for more inclusive health technologies in the future.

Please contact the organiser with any accessibility requirements. Spaces are limited - reserve your place today!

This event is part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2025 and was made possible thanks to funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), which is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).

The ESRC Festival of Social Science is an annual celebration of research and
knowledge about humans and society. It’s a key element of ESRC’s commitment to
share UK social science research with new audiences. This year the festival is being
held from 18 October to 8 November 2025 and features hundreds of free events across
the UK for both children and adults, run by 41 universities and research institutes.
This year, a number of our events explore how our jobs, and our working lives, are
evolving. With rapid advances in technology, the workplace has transformed
dramatically over the past 100 years. But one thing remains constant: people want
access to good jobs that are safe, healthy and provide a decent standard of living. Join
us as we explore what the future of work could look like and how we can shape it
together.
There are also events on a huge range of other topics, including health and wellbeing, the environment, crime and justice, and equality. For more information please visit https://festivalofsocialscience.com.
