Methods Lab: Cross-Disciplinary Applications of RTI

Friday 27th April 2018, 9.30am-5.00pm

Venue: PC Teaching Centre, Room 102, Mathematical Science Building (Morning); Mandela Room, Liverpool Guild of Students (Afternoon) (both University of Liverpool)

Instructors: Dr Alan M. Greaves, Dr Sarah Duffy and JR Peterson

Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) is a method of combining multiple digital photographs of a surface to form a single interactive digital image that can then be investigated to reveal subtle features of surface texture.

Originally developed for use in heritage the method can be used for reading inscriptions, tablets and documents and for artefact conservation and analysis. However, the method also has applications in landscape analysis, micromorphology and architectural analysis.

The Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology at The University of Liverpool has developed a high level of expertise in the application of various RTI technologies, especially in the analysis and conservation of at-risk rock art monuments.

This intensive practical Methods Lab will equip you with a grounding in the theory and practice of Reflectance Transformation Imaging using artefacts from the Garstang Museum of Archaeology and training in using software and digital photography.

Refreshments, lunch and a specially developed RTI training manual will be provided.
