Business Objects

In September 2014 the University upgraded its main reporting system from BusinessObjects XI (known as BOXI) to the BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (BI) Suite 4.1. 

Business Objects is now a suite of tools that allow users to view, sort and analyse business intelligence/management information which is retrieved from several central University systems and databases. These tools are accessed via a central portal known as the BI Launchpad.


The Launchpad (formerly known as InfoView in previous major releases of Business Objects) is a web-based portal used by all Business Objects users to access a variety of tools used for interrogating data: this includes operational reports, information spaces, and interactive dashboards used to illustrate performance against KPIs aligned to the Strategic Plan. The Launchpad is highly customisable to provide quick and easy access to the tools and resources you use most frequently.

Web Intelligence

Web Intelligence, also referred to as Webi, is the standard tool within Business Objects for producing, refreshing/running, and disseminating, operational reports built from querying the central University business systems. Reports are developed by queries built on 'Universes' which draw together data from one or more systems. Webi replaces the Desktop Intelligence software previously used for operational reporting.

The Launchpad povides access to Webi reports, including standard corporate reports saved within folders in the central repository (e.g. General University Reports).

Explorer and Information Spaces

Explorer is a data discovery application that allows you to quickly, and directly, obtain answers to high-level questions through information spaces which have been built based on standard data definitions. These definitions are agreed by all relevant stakeholders, to ensure that data are consistent and meaningful. You can filter, and drill, through information spaces and view only those data you are interested in. Visualisations and charts can then be used to present a high-level analysis.


Dashboards are interactive visualisations of data which allow you to digest information in order to monitor performance against specified targets. Dashboard components display data in a compact and visual manner, enabling you to identify trends and inform decision-making. The majority of dashboards display performance against objectives outlined in the University's Strategic Plan. Dashboards are developed by Computing Services, based on specifications provided by relevant stakeholders.

SAP BusinessObjects Mobile Platform

The SAP BusinessObjects Mobile platform provides you with access to business intelligence content on your iOS (iPhone/iPad) device. The mobile platform can be used for queries, reporting and analysis, whilst you are away from your PC/laptop. At present, information spaces are available through the mobile platform. Webi reports and Dashboards will be made available at a later date.
