I am currently a PhD student primarily working for Prof. Matt Rosseinsky. My research area focuses on the protection of inorganic nanoparticles using polymeric coatings for use in biomedical applications.
I really enjoyed the research projects during my MChem which confirmed that I wanted to do a PhD later on. I finished my undergraduate MChem degree in 2008 and I felt it necessary to have a break from academia in order to have time to think about what area of research I wanted to do and wait/look for the right PhD that would grab my interests. I decided to get a couple of years experience in industry as a Development Chemist at a fluoropolymer coating manufacturer in my home town, Runcorn. I really enjoyed learning about polymer chemistry in industry and wanted to continue learning in this area of research. I also had interests in projects with biomedical applications so I was really happy when I found my PhD scholarship advertised on the University of Liverpool Chemistry department web page. I was attracted to the Chemistry Department at The University of Liverpool mainly because of its world class research status and its wide range of scientific equipment and facilities available.
I love living in the city centre, experiencing the life style and culture of Liverpool and making friends with the people in the department who come from various locations all over the world. I feel doing this PhD has allowed me many opportunities. So far I am really enjoying the work and I have found I have learnt so much chemistry in such a small space of time. I have really enjoyed getting trained and having the experience of using a vast amount of scientific equipment available in the Chemistry Department. I enjoy the fact that I gain a wide scope of knowledge in science in general as my project collaborates with various departments here at the university and also departments in Manchester and Imperial College London.
