Can you introduce yourself and a bit about your background?
I am currently a 4th year student studying Chemistry for Sustainable Energy. I’m from Bristol and first realised my enjoyment for chemistry during A-levels.
Why did you choose to study at the University of Liverpool?
I chose to study at Liverpool as I wanted to experience living in a northern city and liked the look of the undergraduate curriculum.
What inspired you to choose chemistry as your field of study?
I had an engaging teacher at A-levels that inspired me. The plentiful career opportunities also confirmed this as a good degree choice.
How has your educational journey, including schools and institutions you’ve attended, shaped your approach to chemistry?
Initially, I wasn’t sold on science while doing combined science at GCSE, but I found inspiration at A-level with a new teacher. During the degree course, I have enjoyed most of the modules and exploring the different fields that chemistry caters to.
Have you experienced any challenges during your time at Liverpool and how did you overcome them?
The maths was initially challenging as I hadn’t taken it at A-level. However, by spending extra time on it, I was able to reach a good standard.
How would you describe the support in place in the Department of Chemistry at UoL?
This is not something that I have used.
What has the environment at the University of Liverpool been like?
Friendly, with good opportunities for making connections with peers through group projects.
How would you describe the culture of inclusion within the Chemistry Department at UoL?
It seems to be inclusive, though it's hard to say definitively from my position.
What advice would you give someone who wants to study Chemistry? (What would you have liked to know before you began your undergraduate degree?)
It can be full-on at times, but it’s manageable. I would recommend not worrying too much. Make the most of the timetabled lectures/workshops and any other opportunities offered.
