Beyond Boundaries: A Dialogue on Science and Faith
Accelerator physicists, particle physicists and theologians will discuss the common ground between science, philosophy, and religion. The event will take place at the Liverpool Cathedral and will celebrate the cathedral’s centenary since its consecration as a place of worship in 1924.
This event is open to all people and is not restricted to any particular faith.
The panel involves Professor John Ellis from Kings College London, Alex Bainbridge, physicist from STFC/ASTeC, Dr Kate Shaw from the University of Sussex and Professor Andy Beavis from Vertual Ltd., alongside the Reverend Canon Dr Mike Kirby, University of Liverpool and Liverpool Cathedral Canon Scientist, Father Andrew Pinsent, Research Director at the Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion, University of Oxford and Professor Elaine Howard Ecklund, Director of the Religion and Public Life Program in Rice's Social Sciences Research Institute.
The discussion will be moderated by distinguished scientist and STFC council member,Prof Carsten P. Welsch (University of Liverpool/Cockcroft Institute/INFN).
Earlier in the day more than 100 school children will have the opportunity to visit the Liverpool Cathedral and participate in the physics education event: ‘Shining a Light on Particle Physics and Accelerators’. Scientists from STFC, the University of Liverpool, the University of Manchester and the NHS will give talks and showcase demonstrations of particle accelerators and radiotherapy systems.
The event forms part of the next large collider project at CERN, the Future Circular Collider (FCC). The FCC study is an international scientific collaboration of more than 130 institutes, including the University of Liverpool, and led by CERN.
Beyond Boundaries: A Dialogue on Science and Faith takes place on Tuesday, 5 March 2024, from 19:30 to 21:30 GMT at Liverpool Cathedral.
