Study Abroad Stories

Gabriel is a Law with Year Abroad student who travelled to Southeast Asia to spend a year of his studies at the National University of Singapore.

What made you decide to study at your host University?

I chose the National University of Singapore as it is one of the best universities in the world, and the opportunity to challenge myself academically was one that I wished to undertake. Furthermore, the international character of Singapore meant that I had the chance to meet other students from every corner of the world, learning about their cultures and finding out more about their countries. Finally, the location of Singapore as a transport hub within South East Asia meant that I had the ability to travel extensively with relative ease and at a relatively low cost.

What did you enjoy most about studying at your host University?

The NUS campus was amazing, with numerous sporting facilities available free of charge, including tennis courts, football pitches and multiple swimming pools. The campus also had various food stalls, where the cost of food was subsidised for students, meaning that amazing Asian food was available for very cheap prices. The lecturers are all experts in their fields, and from various countries around the world, meaning that you gain a lot of knowledge from their wide expertise and subject knowledge. For example, one of my Law tutors was the former Singaporean Deputy Attorney-General, giving me an experience that would not be available at many other Universities.

What would you say to encourage someone to choose your host university as a Year Abroad option?
