About

Personal Statement

I am a Senior Lecturer in Paediatric Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Liverpool and an Honorary NHS Consultant Paediatric Clinical Pharmacologist at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust.

My research interest is in kidney injury caused by medications and I conduct translational research projects focussed around the prevention and management of this. We have successfully delivered a number of clinical research studies in this area in the paediatric population, including observational studies (McWilliam, 2012; McWilliam, 2014; McWilliam, 2018) and a national, multicentre, randomised controlled trial (McWilliam, 2020). More recently we have established a lab program to investigate the mechanisms of kidney toxicity in cell models and published several systematic reviews addressing different aspects of drug-induced kidney injury (Moss, 2022; Williams, 2022).

I am the theme lead for Pharmacology, Therapeutics and Prescribing at the University of Liverpool School of Medicine, where I seek to share with students a passion for pharmacology that they will take into their chosen career.

My clinical work includes leading the Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) service at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust and I am the clinical lead for the NIHR Alder Hey Clinical Research Facility.

I am a member of the British Pharmacological Society, British Association of Paediatric Nephrology (BAPN) and the UK Kidney Association, and sit on the BAPN Clinical Studies Group.

I am involved in the oversight of Paediatric sub-specialty training in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics in the UK, currently acting as Assessment Advisor for the speciality at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH).
