About

Paul is Emeritus Professor of Operations Management at the University of Liverpool and Distinguished Professor of Supply Chain Management at the University of Oklahoma, USA. Paul began his working career as an Expeditor and then Buyer for Westland Helicopters Limited. He worked on secondment for Sikorsky Aircraft for a year in the USA as contracts negotiator having completed his first degree in Informatics at Sheffield. He then attended Bath University for his MBA and Ph.D. Following the successful completion of these qualifications he moved to a career in management consultancy with A.T.Kearney Limited, based in their Strategic Souring Practice in London. Following several major global assignments he decided to resume his academic career as well as maintaining an interest in consulting and the practical implementation of management theories. He initially took a job as a senior lecturer at the University of Bath and then was offered a position at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Having worked internationally for a few years he decided to return to the UK as professor of Operations Management at the Queen's University of Belfast after two years he was recruited by the University of Manchester, Manchester Business School as Professor of Operations Management, where he worked for fourteen years. At MBS Paul led the Department of Decision Sciences and Operations Management for several years, before becoming the Associate Dean Research and External Engagement and was subsequently appointed as the first Deputy Dean for the School. In 2017 Paul was offered the opportunity to move to the University of Bristol to head up and reconfigure the then School of Economics, Finance and Management into what has now become the University of Bristol Business School. Having completed the successful transformation of the schools Paul decided to take up the position of Deputy Dean and professor at the University of Liverpool. At Liverpool Paul was tasked with leading the review of undergraduate education and also oversaw the successful establishment of the school's triple accreditation.

Paul has always focused on being an engaged educator, he has taught across the full suite of programmes from undergraduate to post-graduate and post-experience students. He has taught internationally in many countries including the US, Australia, UAE, Dubai and Korea. He has also delivered many successful executive education programmes for large multinationals across a variety of industries including aerospace, automotive, food and beverage and service sectors. Paul has won many teaching awards for his innovative and engaged teaching including MBS Best Teaching award and Warwick Business School outstanding teaching award.

In addition to Paul's administrative and teaching roles he is also an accomplished and internationally recognised scholar focusing on the strategic aspects of supply chain management with a particular emphasis on sustainable procurement. Paul has published four books and many research paper in leading international journals, including Production and Operations Management, Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Supply Chain Management and Management Science. Paul has over 13,000 citations of his work and is regularly featured in various highly cited indices of leading international scholars.

In August 2024, Paul decided to take early retirement to focus on several personal projects as well as his writing and research work. Paul is currently working on a new book project: 'A Systems-based Model for Sustainable Strategy Design' (working title).
