About

My main research interests are related to spoken language and include work using spoken corpora to better understand lexis, grammar and lexico-grammar, classroom applications of spoken corpus data and instructed second language acquisition related to different features of spoken language. I have published widely in these areas, including six books and a large number of peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. I welcome PhD applications related to spoken corpus linguistics (e.g. exploring features of spoken language in relation to form and function, exploring spoken discourse), instructed SLA (e.g. experimental research, mixed-methods research, classroom research) or other topics related to these areas.

Prior to my work as an academic, I worked as an English language teacher and trainer in several countries, including China, Japan, Thailand and the UK. I hold the Cambridge CTEFLA and DTEFLA qualifications alongside an MA and PhD from the University of Nottingham.

I am currently academic lead for recruitment, admissions and widening participation in the School of the Arts.
