Elmes Testimonial Fund

Harvey Lonsdale Elmes (1814-1847) is best known as the architect of St George’s Hall in Liverpool. Elmes won a competition to design the hall in 1839, beating more than seventy-five other proposals despite only being twenty-five years old. He won a second design competition the following year for law courts in the city, after which a decision was taken to combine the two buildings forming one large block. Construction of Elmes’ neoclassical design for St George’s Hall began in 1842 with completion in 1854; several years after Elmes died from tuberculosis in 1847.
