Professional activities

My professional activities span academic leadership, sector policy development, editorial work, and extensive collaboration with community, cultural and educational partners in the UK and internationally. I work across disciplines and sectors to strengthen academic standards, build interdisciplinary networks, and support inclusive and community driven approaches to education, communication and regeneration.

I hold a number of significant leadership roles, including Chief Institutional Moderator for Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University (XJTLU), where I provide institutional level scrutiny of assessment and academic standards. I also chair the Interdisciplinary Research Group for Liverpool City Region, bringing together partners from universities, local authorities and the voluntary sector to explore strategic and communicative practices that support fairer, stronger and cleaner regional futures.

Nationally, I contribute to sector wide educational policy and quality assurance. I co led the development of the 2024 QAA Subject Benchmark Statement in Communication, Media, Film and Cultural Studies, chairing the working group on enterprise, employability and industry partnerships, and regularly serve as an external reviewer of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across the UK, Africa and the Gulf.

My professional activities also include editorial and reviewing roles. I sit on the Editorial Board of the Global Communication Repository (SISU) and act as a reviewer for Studies in Higher Education and Developing Academic Practice, and am co editing a forthcoming special issue on urban heritage, value and viability in collaboration with XJTLU colleagues.

Beyond academia, I work extensively with community and voluntary sector partners. As Chair of Safe Regeneration, a multi award winning community development organisation, I help steer strategic decision making, multi stakeholder collaboration and long term regeneration planning. My earlier collaborative research on social return on investment and organisational sustainability has informed local authority approaches to community asset development and cultural infrastructure, and continues to inform national conversations about community power.

Collectively, these activities reflect my commitment to civic engagement, sector leadership, and collaborative knowledge building that strengthens both educational practice and community development.
