Aims

  1. To give students practical experience of work in a cultural institution.

  2. To give students practical experience of research in a cultural institution

  3. To improve student knowledge and understanding of how cultural institutions function

  4. To enable students to contextualise this experience, knowledge and understanding through sustained reflection.


Learning Outcomes

Students will have acquired practical experience of the work conducted in a cultural institution.

Syllabus

Workshop 1: Module Introduction & Placement Preparation jointly run by the Careers & Employability Service and the module convenor from the Department of Philosophy. This session is designed to introduce students to the module, making sure students are clear as to what is expected with regard to both the placement and assessed work.

Workshop 2: Research Skills Workshop led by Faculty Librarian at the University of Liverpool. This session introduces students to practices, skills and strategies that will help them succeed in both the academic and work environments, including effective information management, choice of resources for locating information, and tools and techniques for more efficient workflow.

Workshop 3: Building your CV and preparing for Interviews led by Careers and Employability Service. This workshop is designed to help students build their CV and prepare for interviews, thus preparing them both for securing a placement and for more generally enhancing their employability skills and career prospects.

Workshop 4: Making the most of your placement led by Careers & Employability Service. This session focuses on making an impact in your placement, looking at networking and how to make the most of your placement experience by focusing on how you will build on the placement experience for future career planning.

10 day Work-based Placement at the University’s own new Museum and Gallery site (Victoria Building) or Tate Liverpool, Static, Culture Campus, National Museums Liverpool (comprising World Museum Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery, National Conservation Centre, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Sudley House, Merseyside Mari time Museum, Customs and Excise National Museum, Museum of Liverpool).

2 One-to-One tutorials with the module convenor. The first tutorial will take place before the placement and the second after the placement has begun in order to support students with the preparation and delivery of their assessment.
