Aims

To enhance students' abilities to conduct research, including using library resources for research purposes and developing a research proposal. To prepare students for the conduct of future research in philosophy or a career outside academia.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will have acquired practical experience of the research environment of a university.

(LO2) Students will have acquired practical experience of the norms and expectations of a professional environment.

(LO3) Students will have a firmer idea of issues surrounding employment in educational and research institutions.

(LO4) Students will be able to reflect critically on the work and research conducted in educational and research institutions

(S1) Ability to participate in the working life of a research institution.

(S2) Ability to identify issues involved in the research work of research institutions.

(S3) Ability to negotiate issues surrounding employment and research in research institutions.

(S4) Ability to engage in reflective learning and to describe their own research practice.

(S5) Ability to reflect critically on the role of research institutions.

(S6) Ability to behave in a professional manner, and to reflect on and articulate transferable skills.


Syllabus

 

Whole Session: Research & Professional Skills Workshops (fortnightly, 6 in S1; 2 in S2)

Workshops cover such topics as:

being part of the Liverpool research community;

library skills;

developing a research project;

preparing a research proposal;

preparing a bibliography;

academic publishing;

building a research profile (including online and via social media);

professional skills (including how to make the most of such opportunities as careers workshops and ‘Insights’ sessions with professional philosophers);

reflective learning and practice.

Whole session: Insights Workshops (fortnightly, 4 in S1; 4 in S2)
Workshops with or about visiting speakers. These are practical sessions in which students engage with professionals and peers in a research environment.

Whole Session: Independent Research Experience .
Students are also expected to attend / participate in a variety of research activi ties in the department, including (but not limited to) Work In Progress Seminars and Stapledon Colloquia.
