Aims

The module allows students to understand the development of musical theatre and associated performance practices, and gain deeper knowledge of selected shows. Students will research historical and contemporary examples and present their insights in the form of a review of a current production and a multimedia presentation on a historical topic.

Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Understand the historical and musical development of the musical in relation to historical context.

(LO2) Analyse musical content in relation to its dramatic context, including details of staging and/or cinematic presentation.

(LO3) Understand and critically evaluate musical theatre performances and performance practice.

(S1) Language and format for writing reviews

(S2) Preparing and giving presentations

(S3) Knowledge of other disciplines such as dance, drama, film making.

Syllabus
 

The module will examine the development of the musical, complemented by the study of specific shows in depth. Three key themes run through the module: the relationship between musicals and their historical and social contexts, their reception by critics and audiences, and the relationship between music and musicians and other elements within this multimedia art form. In addition workshops will involve practical experience of reviewing performances, and develop understanding of other aspects of musical theatre production such as dance, set, lighting and sound design and cinematography. The module will include attendance at a current production.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Description: Lectures introduce core concepts and material. Lectures will additionally include some practical experience of reviewing performances, and develop understanding of aspects of musical theatre production such as dance, set, lighting and sound design, and cinematography.

Teaching Method 2 - Seminar
Description: Seminars facilitate further discussion of material raised in lectures by way of group discussion

Teaching Method 3 - Attendance at performances or screenings

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.
