Aims |
|
To develop an understanding of the compositional techniques employed in Beethoven's compositional output. To situate Beethoven's output in relation to both earlier 18thC and later 19thC musical traditions. To develop an understanding of the effects of social and cultural institutions, literature and other aesthetic and philosophical traditions on the composition and reception of Beethoven's output. To develop skills in listening, analysis and criticism specifically suited to the works under scrutiny. |

Syllabus |

Details of the syllabus will respond to developments in scholarship, but an indicative syllabus would include: Historiography of the three styles Beethoven's genres, including symphony, concerto, sonata, quartet, opera Analysis Beethoven's stylistic fingerprints, Beethoven in the context of Haydn and Mozart. Tools for understanding Beethoven's musical meaning Aesthetics and criticism of Beethoven through the ages Beethoven's sketches and his compositional process. The construction of the Beethoven mythology Beethoven's Vienna as a nexus for cultural practice. |

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture The majority of teaching will be delivered face to face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience. |
