Aims

1. To increase awareness of, and ability to make judgements on, principles of historical performance practice.

2. To develop understanding of the theory involved in tuning decisions, particularly historical tuning systems, and apply to their own performance development.

3. To develop practice methods for progressing technical areas for performance.

4. To increase awareness of relation between technique and repertoire choices.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will develop critical faculties and acuity of hearing as they learn about historical tuning systems

(LO2) Students will develop a basic understanding of historical performance practices

(LO3) Students will develop control of their own intonation and basic technical skills while playing/singing

(LO4) Students will communicate an understanding and knowledge of historical performance principles, including historical tuning systems

(LO5) Students will develop technical areas of performance

(LO6) Students will develop practice methods suited to their individual progression

(S1) Problem solving/ critical thinking/ creativity analysing facts and situations and applying creative thinking to develop appropriate solutions.

(S2) Self-management readiness to accept responsibility (i.e. leadership), flexibility, resilience, self-starting, initiative, integrity, willingness to take risks, appropriate assertiveness, time management, readiness to improve own performance based on feedback/reflective learning

Syllabus

 

The syllabus consists of two strands, each of which are organised around the needs and prior experience of students. Individual lessons and group sessions will develop students' technical skills on their own instrument through an appropriate choice of repertoire and development of practice methods. Group sessions/online activities will also develop students' listening skills through hands-on experience of understanding of historical tuning systems, technical practice on instruments, and learning the basics of historical informed performance.

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.
