Aims

To gain a better understanding of the many different aspects of historically-informed performance practice.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) To understand the main principles of historically-informed performance practice.

(LO2) To apply HIP terminology in practical and/or written contexts .

(LO3) To demonstrate the ability to research and to communicate in presentation and in writing approaches to HIP that are relevant to the student’s own instrument.

(LO4) To develop an open-minded approach to HIP applications in performance practice.

Syllabus

 

This module will cover the following topics:
• The history of historically-informed performance practice
• The different assumptions of past periods with respect to the evolution and concerns of editing and notation, doctrine of keys, doctrine of effect
• Stylistic conventions of dance, good v. bad notes
• Instrumental techniques and constructions and their evolutions
• The effect of recordings on music performance
• A study and understanding of primary and secondary sources
