Aims

Provide students with an introduction to music recording, production, management and project planning practices within a real-world record company environment.

Encourage creativity and entrepreneurship in students' own creative practice.

Encourage team-work, problem-solving and resilience skills.

Develop ‘real-world’ music industries employability skills.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will demonstrate skills in music management and project planning, recording and production.

(LO2) Students will analyse with a developed conceptual grasp current management and project planning, recording and production strategies as employed within the music and creative industries.

(LO3) Students will demonstrate a developed understanding of issues impacting record label work.

(LO4) Students will critically engage with academic research relating to music management, project planning, recording and production.

(LO5) Students will apply the critical skills developed throughout the module to their own creative practice.

Syllabus

 

Topics will include: artists & repertoire (A&R) work, artist management, music recording, production and studio management, project planning and consideration of audio (and audio-visual) cultures and contexts.

Students will be expected to apply these issues and approaches to their work on the label, working independently and as part of a team.

The course may also include guest talks from practitioners within the field.

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Description: Lectures introduce core concepts and material. Over 12 weeks.

Description: Seminars will be based around key themes intended to facilitate studio and practical work. Over 6 weeks.

Teaching Method 3 – Studio work
Description: Recording studio work will be undertaken by students to prepare an album for release at the end of semester 2. Over 6 weeks.

Notes: Authentic assessment will be used throughout this module. Students will have an opportunity to complete practical work through the album release assessment and then have an opportunity to reflect on their professional practice through the second assessment.
Description of how self-directed learning hours may be used: Students can prepare readings for lectures, coursework for seminars or spend time familiarising/refreshing their skills in the studios.

The majority of teaching will be delivered face to face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.
