Aims

To further develop the students recording  skills through the introduction of stereo, field, foley and sound FX recording techniques. 


To further develop the students production skills and ability to organise and layer sound in Protools to provide appropriate FX for a Film/TV clip. 


To further develop the students production skills so they can recognise and solve problems that exist within a particular sound recording.


To further develop the students mixing and production skills in relation to larger scale projects of 24 tracks plus. 



Learning Outcomes

The student will be able to sucessfully produce location and foley recordings.

The student will be able to mix and layer sound FX for a Film or TV clip. 

The student will be able to make timing and tuning adjustments to audio files using the relevant software tools and plug-ins.

The student will be able to record and mix a large scale project to a standard suitable to this level of study.

The student will be able to identify and solve technical problems that exist within sound recordings.

Syllabus

Topics include

  • Stereo recording and field recording, sound restoration 
  • Recording and editing Foley
  • Creating sound FX for video
  • Visit to local commercial facility, L.A Productions Film and TV production studios
  • Mixing tracks with problems (poor quality recordings, unwanted noise, poor performances), 
  • Making ti ming and tuning adjustments - Audio quantisation, Melodyne, Comping. 
  • Advanced recording technique
  • Mixing techniques for a large multtrack projects

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lecture - Lectures introduce students to the technical and practical issues. These include stereo microphone techniques, location and foley recording, editing and sound processing in Protools. Practical demonstrations and examples will build on knowledge already acquired in MUSI108. A visit to a local Film and TV Production company will form part of the module.

Practical - Practicals are held in the recording studio. The lecturer will guide students through practical exercises enabling students to further advance their studio skills through hands-on experience working in the studio environment.

Coursework  3 - 4 minute song/in  week 13  40  Yes  Standard UoL penalty applies  Large scale recording production. Notes (applying to all assessments) Assignment 1. This is an individual assignment in which you will be required to record and then edit and mix the foley/sound effects and ambience for a video clip. A number of clips will be provided for you to choose from. You will record your own sound sources in the studio using the foley techniques demonstrated in class and then layer, mix and sync material in Protools. A 1000 word report is also required to discuss the tools and techniques used. Assignment 2. This is a group project in which you will be required to mix a larger scale track that has some technical issues to solve. The problems maybe be tuning and timing issues as well as unwanted noise picked up during the recording process. A 1,500 word report is also required in which you will comment on the tools and techniques used and reflect upon the mixing process. Assignment 3. This is a group or individual project in which you will be required to record and mix a song/instrumental to a professional standard. The track can be for any combination of instruments but you should make use of at least 24 tracks of audio. A 1,500 word report is also required in which you will reflect on the production and demonstrate your understanding of the techniques used.
