Aims

The module aims to provide a solid base of academic and professional skills required for success at university and in the graduate career market. The aim of the module is to give the opportunity for the students to understand the fundamentals of the graduate recruitment process used by businesses to allow for a successful placement/internship application. A fundamental understanding will ensure that students know how to research a business to improve their commercial awareness as part of an application and learn how to make improvements to their application at each stage of the application cycle. Students will also learn how to reflect on their experiences of the mock assessment centre to allow for an action plan to be implemented in advance of the real thing.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1: Lectures
Scheduled Directed Student Hours: 14 hours
Description: 2 hours lectures in the following weeks: 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 10, 12

Teaching Method 2: Workshops delivered by the Careers team
Scheduled Directed Student Hours: 10 hours and 8 hours dedicated to the assessment centre – total 18 hours
Description: 2 hours workshops in the following weeks: 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 AND Assessment centre to take place over 2 days probably in week 8 which will last in total 8 hours

Scheduled Directed Student Hours: 4 hours
Description: Seminars will provide students with the opportunity to ask questions about the assignments and receive feedback as well enhance their understanding on a more academic topic discussed in the lectures
Seminars will take place in Week 2 (1 hours) and week 6 (2 hours) and Week 12 (1 hour)

Se lf-Directed Learning Hours: 114 hours
Description: Students will use remaining self-directed learning hours utilising the skills presented in lectures, workshops and seminars and perform independent research in preparation for interviews / CV prep / applications and assessment preparation.
