Aims

This module aims to:

Provide students with advanced knowledge on functional and strategic HRM;

Contribute to students' better understanding of HR issues in the workplace;

Enhance students’ skills in performing HR tasks and managing human resources.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will be able to evaluate and critically analyse how HRM helps firms achieve and sustain the competitive advantage.

(LO2) Students will be able to evaluate and critically reflect on how HRM strategies assist organisations in achieving sustainable development advantages through enhancing human capitals.

(LO3) Students will be able to demonstrate in-depth understanding of the implications of globalisation and internationalisation on workforce and HR tasks.

(LO4) Students will have developed a deep awareness of theories and practices associated with the management of people in work organisations.

(LO5) Students will be able to critically reflect upon the role HRM plays in contributing to employee outcomes and organisational performance.

(S1) Communication Skills
Students will have opportunities to develop written and oral communication skills through group discussions, in-class presentations and coursework.

(S2) Group Working and Networking Skills
In-class assignments for students will require them to work in groups and manage the interaction and relationships with other group members. Furthermore, students will be required to engage with fellow students and external business contacts in establishing a networked resource for the exchange of ideas and the development of future business relationships.

(S3) Information and Communication Technology Skills
Students will have opportunities to improve their ICT skills by demonstrating skills in the use of software applications including word processing, visual presentations, databases, spreadsheets and using the internet for information searches in the course of researching and presenting coursework.

(S4) Problem Solving and Decision Making
Students will be challenged to think critically about HR issues and dilemmas. They will do this by gathering and synthesising information, analysing alternative perspectives and options and presenting a considered opinion or course of action in their course assessment.

(S5) Personal Effectiveness
Students will be encouraged to think critically about theory and practice and to challenge and critique assumptions about management theories.

Cross-cultural HRM.
