Teaching and Learning Strategies |
|
The module will primarily be delivered through eight e-lectures/seminars. These will consist of podcasts covering key concepts and theories on leadership and videos of noteworthy leaders and leadership situations within the sport industry. Individual online tasks and discussion boards will be used to develop and apply learning within the sport industry and the students’ own work contexts. These will be moderated by the module tutor to ensure individual and group feedback, and to support the development of the virtual groups and to foster skills in critical self-reflection. Students will also be directed to key academic and practitioner readings to further develop their learning. Unscheduled Directed Student Hours: 24 hours Description: The e-Lectures/seminars will equate to 3 hours/week over 8 weeks undertaken asynchronously. Additionally, one scheduled synchronous seminar will be deliv
ered (if there are issues with time zones another seminar will be provided). Description: The scheduled seminar will equate to 2 hours undertaken synchronously. The date and time of the seminar will be confirmed at the start of the module. Students will also be given directed group activities that enable the development of the virtual groups for the assessment and provide opportunities for formative feedback from the module tutor in relation to assessment 1. Unscheduled Directed Student Hours: 8 hours Description: Virtual group work equating to 1 hour/week over 8 weeks. Attendance Recorded: Yes – tracked via the learning platform. Self-Directed Learning Hours: 116 hours Description: This will involve directed and independent reading, independent research into sports organisations and assessment preparation. |
Syllabus |
|
Self-awareness, reflection and implicit theories of leadership: Uses timeline technique/autoethnographic approach to enable students to reflect on how they have learnt to lead and the implicit theories they have developed. This creates a basis from which to explore academic theories of leadership. Leadership definitions and theories will be critically explored in the context of sport including: trait theories, leadership behaviour, situational leadership, followership, transformational/ transactional leadership, charismatic leadership and shared leadership. Responsible leadership: will examine values, purpose, ethics and diversity. Additionally, research relating to the ‘dark side of leadership’ and cases of unethical leadership behaviour within sport will be examined. Teams: this will explore leadership of high performing teams and will include team roles, group development and group think. Leadership development: this will enable students to r eflect on their future leadership development through examination of personality, psychometric assessments, leadership identity, self-efficacy and development planning. |
