About
Susan Canning is Director of the Centre for Educational Development and Support and a Senior Lecturer in Digital Education and Innovation within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at the University of Liverpool, UK. She brings over 22 years of experience in higher education as an academic lecturer. Susan holds a BSc (Hons), MSc, SFHEA , PGCert, and a PhD in E-Research and Technology-Enhanced Learning at Lancaster University. Her research is centred on the pedagogical application of simulation within health education.
Prior to her current appointment, Susan served as Programme Leader for the Network, Security, and Forensics pathway, with specialist expertise in Forensic Computing. In her current role, she provides strategic leadership to a multidisciplinary team, working in close partnership with academic colleagues, professional services staff, and researchers to advance innovation in pedagogy and digital practice.
She is the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences’ lead for external Continuing Professional Development (CPD) provision and co-lead for the Faculty’s Clinical Education Network, supporting collaboration and knowledge exchange across clinical and academic communities. Her scholarly interests include simulation-based learning, immersive technologies, and the enhancement of student experience.
Since joining the University of Liverpool, Susan has played a pivotal role in supporting colleagues across the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences in the design, development, and evaluation of high-impact, technology-enhanced education initiatives, contributing to measurable improvements in teaching quality and the student learning experience..
