The African School of Fundamental Physics and its Applications 2012

DITANET sponsored two scholarships for students to attend The African School of Fundamental Physics and its Application which was held between 15th July and 4th August 2012 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science of Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana.  This biennial school was first established in 2010 in order to provide training to students, with a minimum of four years of university study, and addresses issues of fundamental physics as a means of complementing PhD studies.  It is a non-profit making organization and depends solely on sponsorship in order to provide financial support to 50 Sub-Saharan African students.

The school aims to develop science and its application across Africa by increasing the number of students undertaking post graduate study providing close links between theoretical, experimental and applied physics and computing, in addition to providing networking opportunities.  Over the period of the school 32 lecturers were provided by expert scientists from Europe, America and South Africa.   These lectures were split into four sections: Theoretical Subatomic Physics; Experimental Subatomic Physics; Accelerators and Technology and Information Technology and GRID.

Overall the School was extremely well received and is a success story for international collaboration with some 27 contributors, including DITANET, providing sponsorship.
